Day 13 extra: Aurora Borealis

When we left Tromsø Thursday evening at 6:30pm it was already getting dark. Once we left the port it was really dark and the first stars appeared. While we sat on Deck 7 to watch the cruise past Tromsø we saw a first glimpse of the aurora.

We bolted to our cabin to get camera and tripod (as you never know how long its possible to see her) and went outside on Deck 5. And then the show startet. The ship was going really slow past Tromsø and kept going slow for at least another 30 min. I guess the captain knows the less movement and vibration, the better for aurora pictures 🙂 Nevertheless it was still impossible to have zero movement and vibration. I took all images with my Olympus OM D EM 10 with the 12mm olympus m.zuiko f2.0 lens. ISO was set between 400 and 640 this time and I shot with 10s-30s. By the way the aurora forecast for that night predicted an activity of 4 out of 9. It felt and looked like a 9, I did close to no editing. The colors were incredibly vivid and no camera was needed to see the lights.  I hope you like the pictures. Nevertheless I processed the pictures as RAW data in Lightroom.

All pictures were taken either in Tromsø or between Tromsø and Skervøy

  1. We’ve been told that there are better chances of seeing Mrs Aurora while on the ferry. It takes what 7 days from Bergen? And each night is an opportunity. Awe….wish we were there!

    1. I guess the chance is pretty high to see northern lights on the ferry as it cruises all through northern Norway. Its just not the best option for photographs of the aurora. It takes 7 nights from Bergen and 6 nights southbound from Kirkenes.

      1. For taking pictures. Cause the ship is moving constantly and there are vibrations from the engines this is a killer combination for long exposure pictures. For simply seeing them a Hurtigruten trip is a good option.
