Zion National Park, USA

Zion National Park in Utah, very close to the small town of Springdale, UT. Springdale is the best place to start your trip to Zion.

If you have a camper or RV you can spend the night in the national park. There are several camping grounds. For everybody else on the road in a car, Springdale is the place to be. It has all kinds of accomodation including camping grounds.

Springdale, UT is about 160mi north east of Las Vegas. If you go direcly from Vegas to Zion it will take about 2,5h. If not there is a nice detour, about one hour north of Vegas, the Valley of Fire State Park. Its a nice interception but if time is limited than do not go there and concentrate on the big national parks as they are way more spectacular. Its nice to see and worth the 10$ entrance fee.

Zion National Park is simply incredible. Its awesome, beautiful and out of this world. Its not allowed to go into the park with the own vehicle. The car/RV can be parked in one of the big parking lots at the visitor center or you can take the shuttle that runs throughout of Springsdale and collects eager visitors from early in the morning til late in the afternoon. Within the park the transport runs via shuttle busses as well. It works flawlessly and is very reliable. Americans simply know how to run big tourist attractions.

There is so much to see and do within Zion National Park, lots of hikes etc.

The first stop was Angels Landing. The hike is 5,5miles roundtrip with about 1500ft elevation change. Its a very popular hike and its clever to be in the park at the opening time. Its more fun to not have to walk around hundreds of people 🙂

The next part of the hike is called Refrigerator Canyon. The name is program.

After the Refrigerator Canyon you will come to the next highlight…Walters Wiggles. A short but very steep hill which is actually not as bad as the first part of the hike.

Walters Wiggles, Angels Landing Hike

If you have made it through Walters Wiggles the first part of the hike is done. You have not reached Angels Landing yet as I thought at first. To get there it takes another hour or so and you gotta do some climbing. A fear of height is not a good company for this part of the trip.

Angels Landing really is a strenous hike but worth every drop of sweat. It is simply an awesome and well maintained hike. We loved it!!!

Nevertheless it is not suitable for families with small children who cannot walk or do not want to walk for too long on their own…its not suitable for any one with knee or back problems as its steep at times and NO its not suitable for any one wearing Flip Flops or tiny sneakers.

  1. Ich habe das gelesen (mit Wörterbuch!) Sehr schön. 🙂 Apologies for practicing my poor German on you, but thank you for writing such a good reading exercise for me.

I don’t think I would try this hike with my Kinder. In 2013, we rode the train from Boston via Chicago to Flagstaff, AZ to visit the Grand Canyon. Then, my husband flew home to go back to work, and the kids and I drove with my mother from Arizona to California, then up the west coast all the way to my native state (Oregon.) The desert southwest is so beautiful.

  2. Wow, those views in the last pictures are simply amazing… imposing rocky mountains, sprinkled with trees and bushes. I wish I could enjoy this landscape and take some pictures as well 😉

  3. Lovely post, brings back such warm memories to our Southwest USA tour last Summer, Zion Np was my favourite one as it was so versatile and included also many easy breathtaking hikes, important for me as a chronic backpain patient. I could not do Angel’s landing but didn’t get the feeling of missing out, so much to see and do there! Hope to return in a few years!
